Interview
with Jeannie Piekos inventor and owner Norma: What is Bag-E-Wash?
Jeannie: Bag-E-Wash is an
innovative dishwasher accessory that allows consumers to efficiently wash
their zipper style food storage bags in the dishwasher. The bags come out
clean, dry and ready for reuse. We use freezer-style bags and our test
bags went through over 50 washings and dryings. Some of those bags are
still in our private use! Zipper-style bags, made from polyethylene, are
built tough and strong. They can withstand a lot of reuse. Bag-E-Wash
works with any make or model dishwasher and is adjustable so it works with
sandwich size up to gallon size bags. Bag-E-Wash is the little green
gadget with a big impact! Norma: What a great idea! But so many people dream of inventing something…and you actually did! Can you tell me about it? Jeannie: About 12 years ago I was an earth-conscious mom with three hungry kids. I would pack lunches everyday reminding my kids to bring their containers and baggies back home for reuse. The kids did their part but then the baggies would either have to "soak" in the sink or I would rinse them out and they would hang all over my kitchen - over my utensils, faucet, even my hanging plants at the window - not a pretty sight! So I said to my handy-man husband, "why don't you invent a way I can wash these (expletive deleted) things in the dishwasher?" And, lo and behold he did - although like many things on his to-do list - it took him quite a while - 8 years actually! Ah, but patience pays off because now we have had this great green business for 4 years plus we have an efficient way to make sure those bags are really clean and can easily reuse them. Our business mantra is Don't throw them, Reuse them! Norma: Where is Bag-E-Wash available? Jeannie: Bag-E-Wash is available at my website www.Bag-E-Wash.com plus many other sites around the country. Jeannie: I have added other products to my website but I have tried to keep it in line with the original concept of Bag-E-Wash - reusing what we already have and conserving what we can. So I carry bag dryers for the folks out there without dishwashers. The dryers (or as several of my wholesale clients call them, Bag-E-Trees) are made of sustainable wood and hold baggies open for effective drying. They are attractive on the kitchen counters and very effective. I also carry lightweight, mesh reusable produce bags. These bags come three to a set and are meant to replace those filmy plastic bags available in all produce departments. These are great bags. They are washable, breathable and yet very tough. The world can really do without that filmy plastic. Norma: Is there anything else you would like to add? Jeannie: Well, I would say, never under-estimate what effect changing one habit can make. A favorite Bag-E-Wash fact I like to use for illustration is that one box of (30) gallon size bags washed with Bag-E-Wash and reused keeps 1,500 bags out of our landfills, incinerators and oceans and saves $150.00. 1,500 bags and that is just one family for about a year. So imagine the impact of 10 families, a whole neighborhood of families, a whole city. By simple acts we can really turn the garbage problem around. Plastic food storage bags are a wonderful convenience - they are sterile, simple to use, flexible and non-breakable. So let's use and reuse them in the smartest, most earth-friendly, greenest way imaginable.
