It is not easy to find stylish, toxic-free, eco- friendly furniture and accessories. For example, the wood in furniture can come from endangered forests. Fabric is usually coated with fire-resistant chemicals and is often made up of synthetics, which are petrochemical-based products and outgas chemicals into your home. Most mattresses are made from polyurethane foam plastic, sprayed with chemical fire retardants and covered with polyester that will outgas for several years. There is a frightening amount of unhealthy products in the typical home. However, I am not going to go to your home and recommend that you throw everything that is toxic away and start from scratch. For one thing, that is terribly wasteful. For another, most products stop outgassing and become relatively benign in six months to a year. (There are even tricks to make that happen quickly.) However, if you are in the market for a new look, I will design a beautiful space for you with stylish, natural, non-toxic, environmentally friendly furniture and accessories. |
